Flue gas extractor capacitor

The capacitor for the flue gas extractor is located between the flue gas motor and the stove's circuit board and is typically mounted on the pellet stove itself, not on the motor. It gives the motor the extra torque needed to start, and when it becomes weak, the flue gas extractor hums without properly starting.

The capacitors are available in 1 and 2.5 µF, and the same capacitors are also used for centrifugal blowers.

Turn the fan wheel by hand

Disconnect the power and turn the flue gas extractor fan wheel by hand. If it turns easily and freely, the bearings and wheel are in order, and if the motor still hums without starting, the capacitor is the most likely cause. The same applies if the flue gas extractor only starts when the wheel is given a push. Never reach into a wheel that is live.

If the motor runs normally but the stove reports a fault with the revolutions, the fault is in the Encoder. If the wheel feels stiff or scrapes when turned, it is typically the bearings, and then the flue gas extractor itself must be replaced.

Same µF as the old one

The capacity is printed on the capacitor and must be the same on the new one, as an incorrect value gives the motor too little or too much starting power. Because the capacitor is fitted to the stove, it can usually be replaced without touching the motor. If the flue gas extractor needs to be removed anyway, the gasket should be replaced, and the joints can be sealed with glue. The capacitor is one of several inexpensive parts around the motors in the pellet stove that are worth ruling out before buying a complete motor.
